“Psychedelics and Spirituality”
with Roland Griffiths, PhD
Below are links to 2 extraordinary videos of Johns Hopkins professor Roland Griffiths. Feel free to use them to share information about psilocybin research and about this great human who gave his precious time to edify the TDA community. The first video is a presentation that Professor Griffiths gave to the TDA community and friends on 12/6/22. (A giant THANK YOU to our friend Rick Langer for making this happen). The second video is Professor Griffiths’ reflections on his mortality (post cancer diagnosis) and the gratitude that he feels. Very moving.
Professor Griffiths has been on the Johns Hopkins faculty for 50 years, studying the behavioral and subjective effects of mood-altering drugs, including sedative-hypnotics, caffeine, and novel mood-altering drugs. He is the author of over 400 scientific publications and has trained more than 60 postdoctoral research fellows.
Professor Griffith’s research interest in psychedelics flowed from a meditation practice he started in 1994, which sparked his curiosity in altered states of consciousness and the nature of the mind. Many regard the initial event of the current psychedelic renaissance to be the 2006 publication of his study “Psilocybin Can Occasion Mystical-type Experiences Having Substantial and Sustained Personal Meaning and Spiritual Significance.”

Facing Mortality
In this video, Professor Griffiths—one of the great figures in psychedelic research and discovery—reflects on his mortality and gratitude, after receiving a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. From the bottom of our collective TDA heart, we are so—well—grateful that this extraordinary human walks the earth.
“We know from research and experience that psychedelics can occasion profound awakenings…opening individuals to the realization that we are all in this together”
